THOUGH the Government will insist it is focussed on the job in hand — creating jobs and growing the economy — it is no longer possible to argue that we are not on an election footing.

The date may be unknown, but the objective is clear: Get re-elected without making any foolish promises or alliances.

How long this state of suspension will exist is anyone’s guess, but it must have an impact on the Government’s decision-making capacity, especially decisions that will have a negative impact on any section of society.
