We won’t be bullied into repeal of 8th amendment

The speed at which Deputy Jerry Buttimer called for an “abortion forum” to examine Ireland’s law is as predictable as the Government’s ambition to remove protection from the unborn child.

In the summer, a young, immigrant, pregnant woman fled here.

A panel of three ‘experts’ was set up under abortion legislation: it was comprised of two psychiatrists and an obstetrician and certified that the woman was suicidal.

However, the obstetrician was obliged “to intervene to terminate the pregnancy to protect the life of the mother, while making every effort to preserve the life of the baby.”

This resulted in a caesarean section, which saved both the woman and her baby. Despite this success, Fine Gael’s pro-abortion colleagues called for the repeal of the 8th Amendment.

The next opportunity to be exploited was the recent case of the pregnant woman who was certified as clinically dead, though her unborn child was alive.

But it it took three weeks for the cumbersome legal machine to crank up and make a decision.

Perhaps the legal system that allowed this should be examined, rather than joining the clamour of the pro-abortion lobby for the repeal of the 8th Amendment.
