So the Oireachtas banking enquiry has begun, arguably six years too late.

Committee chairman Ciaran Lynch said (Irish Examiner 17 December): “It is an opportunity to shine a light on a dark and painful recent time in our past … an opportunity to learn from the mistakes that were made” etc. Oh would that it were so.

There was a saying in military circles that “the purpose of a court of enquiry is to establish the truth, and, having established it, to bury it.”
