Holding out little hope for the banking enquiry

So the Oireachtas banking enquiry has begun, arguably six years too late. 

Committee chairman Ciaran Lynch said (Irish Examiner 17 December): “It is an opportunity to shine a light on a dark and painful recent time in our past … an opportunity to learn from the mistakes that were made” etc. Oh would that it were so.

There was a saying in military circles that “the purpose of a court of enquiry is to establish the truth, and, having established it, to bury it.”

This enquiry is mainly politicians enquiring into their own mistakes, the results of which have been felt by the most vulnerable in Irish society.

The perpetrators of these mistakes, former politicians, bankers and developers have mainly gotten off scot free with their pensions, bonuses, off-shore accounts and bankruptcy.

I fear that truth and justice will be buried.
