Let us honour those who were killed by nationalists in 1916

It would be salutory for Taoiseach Enda Kenny, and ex-Government minister, and leader of the now defunct Progressive Democrats, Michael McDowell, to reflect upon the fact that former Taoiseach John Bruton’s, sustained, relentless, and penetrating critique of the “1916 Rising,’’ will not conveniently vanish into the wilderness.

Both of those ardent apologists for those six days of “Fenian’’ shame, conspiratorial mass murder, mayhem and terror must note that most people on this island – educated in the imperative need to respect democracy, and the rule of law – are not therefore the malleable brainwashed generations of before.

John Bruton has done immense work in educating the public about the immoral nature of the “Rising’’ and how unnecessary the event was. Historians who respect their own academic integrity now know why it took place and so surely we as a generous people should concern ourselves in 2016 not with those who perpetrated this attack but their victims, like Constable Michael Lahiff and Constable James O’Brien, who were brutally slain on the first day?
