Bishop deserves to retain his name on city park

While the Sheares brothers may not have ‘come from Glasheen’, as Pat Daly thinks, (Irish Examiner, June 4) that is no reason why they should be denied honouring, but not at the expense of Bishop Lucey.

Bishop deserves to retain his name on city park

It is never a laudable exercise to advance the cause of one man at the expense of a second.

What was excellent about the Shearess is not that they were revolutionaries but that their father set up the Society for the Relief of Prisoners Confined for Small Debt, a forerunner of the social welfare system Ireland enjoys today.

By his support of small enterprises, the credit union movement, large building schemes that gave welcome employment and social inclusion, it is obvious Bishop Lucey would relate more closely with those who frequent the park these days than the wealthy landowning family of Sheares.
