It is unfortunate that some parents who gave children smart phones for Christmas will come to regret the gift. Especially as many parents gave phones to try and keep in contact with youngsters and ensure their safety.

In a statement that seems counterintuitive to the age INTO general secretary Sheila Nunan said she could not think why a primary pupil would get a smartphone.

However, she wisely pointed out that any parent introducing a child to the world of instant social media, not all of it benign, should know of the dangers and more importantly prepare their child to be robust and self-confident enough to withstand the bullies’ slings and arrows if they are unfortunate to become a target.
