Nuclear power best for generating energy

Many objections are being aired about the negative impact of the proliferating electricity pylons, considered necessary to expand our electricity grid, to accommodate the growing number of wind turbines. Further grid extensions to accommodate wind energy are also envisaged.

Nuclear power best for generating energy

Meanwhile, there is a smarter alternative which has not been adequately considered. We would not require grid expansion with its attendant pylons and overhead cables if we were to replace one existing fossil fuel station with modern nuclear power. This would also be a significantly cheaper option.

Specifically, the Moneypoint coal burning power station in Co Clare (due to close in 2025) could be replaced by small modular reactors for less than €4bn. This compares very favourably with the wind-based alternative which is estimated at €3.2bn for grid modifications alone and a possible further €10bn for the wind turbines themselves.

Nuclear power generates consistent, low carbon, base load electricity and is not subject to the vagaries of the wind which cannot be relied upon when it is most needed — on a still mid-winter evening.

A careful cost benefit analysis by Government of our future energy options is urgently needed.
