Abolish councillors too

As the Seanad abolition debate intensifies, it’s difficult not to look at other areas of our political landscape that could be pruned. For one, our local councils appear bloated with well-remunerated, pointless politicians, especially considering the powerful role of county/city managers.

Many counties would be better-served by, at most, a mayor and deputy mayor, as the electorate’s voice alongside the civil servants. This might spare us ridiculous, long-winded meetings at which councillors compete to congratulate or commiserate somebody. Can’t they just send an email instead?
