The real ‘Rebel’ story
In 1491, Perkin Warbeck, in his claim to the throne of England, attempted to overthrow King Henry VI. The then lord mayor of Cork travelled to London with some of the city’s councillors to join Warbeck.
Unfortunately, they were captured and executed, and for its support of a claimant to the throne of England, the city was recognised as of then with the title ’Rebel Cork’ for its loyalty to a man claiming to be the real King of England.
