Be careful outdoors this week

MANY people will be taking to the outdoors over the next seven days during National Heritage Week for which no less than 1,700 events have been organised.

Be careful outdoors this week

Forests, nature reserves and restored old buildings, such as the magnificent Loop Head lighthouse, in Co Clare, are among the places to visit. People will also be going onto private property, including farmland, which brings with it a responsibility of care.

Some love to take their pet dogs into the outdoors, and while this may be fun for the dog, it can create problems for other recreational users or local farmers. The message here is that people need to keep their dogs on a lead and under control at all times.

Don’t take dogs onto farmland or mountain areas, especially where sheep or cattle are grazing.

Recently, dogs were banned from Carrantuohill, Ireland’s highest mountain, because of attacks on sheep.

People are taking full advantage of the relatively fine summer to get to beaches, forests, parks, mountains and lakes and Leave No Trace Ireland is encouraging everyone to enjoy the outdoors responsibly.

Maura Lyons, programme manager with Leave No Trace Ireland, a charity promoting responsible outdoor recreation, says they should minimise any negative environmental impacts they may cause by planning their trips a little better and adhering to a few simple messages.

Ms Lyons says people thinking of an outdoor activity like canoeing, swimming, or even walking, should plan in advance and ensure they have the necessary skills and equipment.

With so many people driving into the countryside to visit scenic spots, car parking can be a real issue and can cause problems not only for visitors but for local residents. To prevent parking problems, people are encouraged to use public transport where possible, or to car-pool and use car parks.

Blocking gateways can also be a nuisance and really irks farmers who may need access to their fields. Heritage Week continues until Sunday next, Aug 25. Enjoy.
