Jury reform - Welcome proposals

The Law Reform Commission proposals to remake how juries are selected and serve in our courts are very welcome and probably overdue.

Jury reform - Welcome proposals

By widening the net, to include previously excused professions or non-nationals living here for some years, the burden of this onerous and sometimes dangerous duty is better spread across the community.

It is envisaged that the proposals would deal with concerns around jury-tampering and misconduct, including internet research, by jurors.

This is essential as we have seen too many trials collapse after jurors are convinced that only an immediate and permanent case of amnesia can safeguard their health. Jury service is a great privilege, but that does not always mean it is attractive. Anything that can be done to protect this vital cog in our justice system should be welcomed and quickly implemented.
