A national sport

The eyes of the nation will be focused on today’s Aintree Grand National.

It is one day in the year that many people who would not otherwise bet on horses tend to have a flutter.

First run in the 1830s, the Grand National is the most valuable horse race over jumps anywhere in Europe. The prize money totals more than €1m.

The race over 30 fences provides nine minutes of sustained excitement, watched by more than 500m people in over 140 countries. It invariably tends to be one of the most colourful and exciting sporting spectacles on television. So many factors come into play that any of the likely 40 runners could win.

Irish horses, trainers, owners and jockeys have a proud history in the event. A good result would help give another boost to our equine industry, as well as giving a lift to the spirits of so many people.
