Mayor of Limerick John Moran has written to justice minister Jim O'Callaghan to establish whether Budget 2027 provides any funding for Limerick's community CCTV service.

Limerick mayor John Moran has once again asked the Government to provide a budget for the CCTV network in Limerick, as staff at a monitoring centre have been informed their jobs are at risk.

Mr Moran has written to justice minister Jim O'Callaghan to establish whether Budget 2027 provides any funding for Limerick's community CCTV service.

He said since the budget was announced on Tuesday, no one from Government has contacted Limerick City and County Council or the mayor's office.

"I am writing to seek urgent clarification as to whether funding has been allocated to secure the sustained operation of Limerick's community CCTV service,” wrote Mr Moran.

If funding is provided, he has asked the minister to confirm the responsible department and the arrangements for releasing it. If it is not, he has requested an urgent meeting.

"The issue is causing much concern here in Limerick, especially with the staff who have been put on protective notice,” Mr Moran added.

This comes as staff at the Moyross Community Centre have issued a protective notice to all 15 staff members. More than 300 cameras are monitored at the centre.

They said while the notice was a precautionary measure, they were required to notify staff given the potential impact of funding decisions. They said funding was not forthcoming and may impact their role.

Recently, John Moran and príomh chomhairleoir Tom Ruddle wrote a letter to housing minister James Browne following a special council meeting at which councillors unanimously backed a request for more funding for CCTV.

In the Dáil, a number of TDs raised the issue, which has yet to be addressed by the minister.

Prior to the budget, calls were made for finance minister Simons Harris to intervene, and he said he would speak to justice minister Jim O’Callaghan.

TD Maurice Quinlivan said it was time for Jim O’Callaghan to guarantee the continued funding of the CCTV operations centre in Moyross and secure its immediate and long-term future.
