Thanks for naked bike support

As a cyclist who participated in last year’s naked bike ride but, unfortunately, not the one which took place last Saturday, I am delighted to see that the “powers that be” have finally “copped on” and decided to get behind this fantastic addition to Cork’s cultural calendar.

With not only a photo opportunity with the Lord Mayor, but a visible Garda escort to ensure the safety of participants and onlookers alike, Ireland’s only World Naked Bike Ride event, taking place in 200 locations worldwide, has now become yet another fantastic addition to the Rebel County’s annual events.

Garda support is especially important for this event, which highlights road safety for cyclists, so I was heartened to see that this year’s ride had a police escort.

In particular, I wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to Garda Finbar O’Sullivan, who heads up Cork’s Traffic Division, for his support of this event. Hopefully, this annual celebration of cycling will go from strength to strength.I look forward to the day that children, parents, the young and old can safely use the roads of Cork without fear for their lives.
