Garda gagging order - Edict must be explained
However, there have been indications that a culture exists that puts the corporate needs of the force above other obligations. The initial opposition to its work experienced by the Garda ombudsman’s office was one example. The force is also beyond the remit of the Freedom of Information Act and that exclusion neither serves society or the force well.
The gagging order imposed on gardaí over possible station closures is unfortunately another example of a mind set that rejects transparency in public and community affairs. If this veto was influenced by politicians it is all the more worrying and the Commissioner must explain why such an anti-democratic edict was issued or else withdraw it immediately.
