Sinking feeling
An enormous amount of hard work, by thousands of decent God fearing people, cynically led, and shortly to be sacrificed on the altar of global imperialism, went into trying to construct something which essentially was unfit for purpose. It sank. Most of the wealthy survived, most of the poor drowned for lack of lifeboats.
To contextualise it in modern terms, perhaps “if Carlsberg did icebergs... ” would be appropriate.
