Politics and policing - An idea worth considering

Yesterday’s suggestion from the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) that an independent policing authority should run of the force deserves consideration.

Unfortunately the Department of Justice, despite the mandate for reform given to its minister in last year’s election, dismissed the idea by saying no such proposal was under consideration.

Though the AGSI focus was on promotions and pay recent tribunal reports pointed to Garda decisions that might be rooted in political interference or worse.
