Give Oireachtas teeth to replace tribunals
If the proposed constitutional amendment is opposed by the likes of Peter Sutherland and Dermot Gleeson, who both ran AIB, and Michael McDowell, who ran the PDs, no less, then it’s clear the amendment should be passed.
Because what they really mean is that if these powers are given to the Oireachtas, it can then start to properly investigate why, for example, AIB ended up in the mess it’s in and why.
More importantly, such a review could actually name the people responsible for causing that complete and total failure of governance. Also, it could do so without fear of those people it names abusing the legal system through never ending court cases to avoid ever being held to account for their actions, as has been the case so far, causing tribunals to last for years and the taxpayer to face a bill of millions because the likes of some former AGs are too gutless to take responsibility for their mistakes.
