However, people with basic common sense would also know that one should not overexert themselves, engage in punishing and unnatural workout routines or engage in competitions when not properly trained. He failed to mention appropriate footwear.

I no longer take part in competitions but jog (leisurely) six mornings per week and dance 4/5 nights per week. I would not agree that road running is a “mug’s game”.
