Time to reform the dreaded Leaving Cert
The current system has many flaws, from the method of subject choice, to the exam format itself.
A programme of continuous assessment would be the most viable of introductions.
A programme like this would have no cost implications, yet it would rejuvenate the educational system in this country and in turn enhance the level of college applicants.
The current system could possibly allow a student to pass through fifth and sixth year failing various class tests and yet cram enough to gain a reasonable mark in the Leaving Cert.
More worryingly, a conscientious candidate could ace every class exam over the two years, then have a bad day in the Leaving Cert and be awarded a sub-standard, almost misleading result.
A teenager is more likely to absorb information if they are continuously tested on it rather than cramming vigorously for one, over hyped, pressurised examination.
Continuous assessment would totally remove the pressure that surrounds the dreaded Leaving Cert and instead give our young people a well-balanced, fair, quality education.
