Special Olympians - An example to us all

The closing of the Special Olympics in Athens yesterday was another welcome occasion in which people with special needs were celebrated rather than hidden.

The Games were an occasion in which the power of pure sport was harnessed to unite people in a spirit of acceptance and inclusion.

Those with special needs are among the most loveable and vulnerable people in our society.

No doubt they all suffer at times from the insensitivity of boorish and ignorant people.

Over the years, the Special Olympics have been making a real difference to the lives of not only those with special needs, but also to their families.

Many have been helped to stand up for themselves and demonstrate a real degree of independence.

In the process, many have become articulate spokespeople for their own cause.

They have also enhanced the true spirit of sport by reminding people that it is really more about taking part rather than winning, and they have been a shinning example for all in helping to overcome some of the ugly prejudices in society.
