Why I oppose Norris

I WAS quite astonished to read Maurice Fitzgerald’s outburst (June 7) against those who oppose David Norris’s campaign for the presidency.

The vast bulk of media commentary on Norris’s interview has in fact been favourable to the senator.

I oppose Mr Norris’s bid for the presidency because I profoundly disagree with him on almost every issue upon which he expounds. I find offensive Mr Norris’s racist and bigoted attacks on both the present and the previous Pope, demonstrating an underlying and abhorrent anti-Catholic prejudice. Before Mr Fitzgerald accuses me of “homophobia” for daring to oppose Mr Norris, I should declare that I have no interest whatsoever in Mr Norris’s sexual views or preferences, which bore me to death.
