A FEW days ago, we saw tonnes and tonnes of Spanish cucumbers being dumped as having caused an outbreak of food poisoning in Germany.

Now, we are told, it was not the cause. Does any body remember the lines in the old Goon song Major Dennis Bloodnok’s Rock-and-Roll Call Tango — “Gents to the left, ladies to the right. All join hands — panic”?

Is there a case for making this the anthem of international health and safety, with their flag an item of underwear in brown corduroy?
