THE chief merit of Queen Elizabeth II’s successful visit was the extent to which it contributed towards advancing the Good Friday Agreement.

The PSNI is the cornerstone of that agreement and the success of that police force depends on the extent to which it wins cross-community support. Hence, the decision by the British government to abandon the aim of ensuring as soon as possible that 40% of the PSNI be drawn from the nationalist community is difficult to understand.
