THE public has every right to be furious over the lack of stringent regulation in vital aspects of life in this country, ranging from the shambles of financial control to taxi crime.

Taxi industry exposé - Review is long overdue

As witnessed in the RTÉ Prime Time expose on the taxi business, regulation and supervision of the industry is so diffuse among official bodies as to be effective. Thus, cowboy operators have got away with bribery of NCT assessors and other criminal activities.

To be really effective, regulators must have sharper teeth. The proposed Government review of all aspects of the taxi industry is long overdue. In the interest of public safety, it must lead to prompt, decisive and much tougher action.
