Hold elections on Sunday so all can vote

GIVEN the political meltdown that we are currently in with many rats fleeing the sinking ship, the country will be going to the polls within the next three months.
Hold elections on Sunday so all can vote

As a young professional working in Dublin, I want to know what it would take for the election to be held on Sunday to allow people like myself to come home to cast our votes in our home constituencies? My home is west Limerick and I don’t see why I should have to change my registration to an area in Dublin where I am only living temporarily. There are no reasons I can see for not holding the elections on a Sunday, aside from lack of will among the political class. The churches have stated that they have no problem with it but I think politicians are afraid of letting as many people vote as possible. Yet, they wonder and complain that younger people are not participating in the political process. Aside from that the advantages of holding elections on a Sunday would be the lack of lost days and costs for closing schools to act as polling stations. It would also benefit families who wouldn’t have to incur extra child care costs because of schools being closed.
