Gangland killings - Murder with impunity

GANGLAND killings in Dublin have become such a regular occurrence that the city is beginning to take on aspects of Chicago during the height of prohibition.

People are being gunned down in broad daylight.

The latest victim, Daniel Gaynor, was shot repeatedly in front of his two young sons early on Saturday evening. The fact that the victim was categorised as “well known to the gardaí,” should not be seen as minimising the implications of the murder.

The gangland killers appear to be operating with a sense of impunity in Ireland. There were seven gangland killings during the whole of 2004, when Justice Minister Michael McDowell famously described gangland murders as “the sting of a dying wasp”.

Saturday’s murder, the 15th gangland killing this year, was committed with casual contempt for the public and law enforcement generally. It is as if these gangsters think that our system of justice has become so dysfunctional that they can behave with a reckless disregard for any likely consequences.
