Transport policy as bankrupt as the state

I WISH to congratulate Peadar Ó Laoire (Letters, May 22) for highlighting the “daft” proposal to spend millions digging a rail tunnel connecting Heuston and Connolly stations in Dublin when, as he says, a virtually unused rail connection between the two stations already exists.

Transport policy as bankrupt as the state

That proposal goes along with the equally daft proposal to spend millions building a metro to the airport while at the same time cutting down on the relatively inexpensive bus service.

Anyway, if the very under-utilised Port Tunnel had been made a bit bigger there would be no need build a metro at all.

As if we had not enough daft projects we have also spent €60m building the Samuel Beckett Bridge while at the same time making access to it very difficult. Like the road to the airport, it also has bus lanes but no buses.

If such incompetent transport policy is an example of policymaking in general, it is no wonder the country is nearly bankrupt.
