Scrap the presidency

HAVING just returned from almost a year travelling, I must admit that I am not aware of all the recommendations in the McCarthy Report.

But I am intrigued to know if it has suggested the culling of the white elephant in the room.

We could save millions by axing the office of President.

The position is a luxury that we cannot afford.

It serves no meaningful purpose and the indefinite termination of this office would upset no one, bar a few politicians who are hoping for a nice retirement package.

And lets be done with it pronto, for fear there is a former Taoiseach champing-at-the-bit to hang his anorak in the Arás.
