Schools can help prevent road deaths

I WOULD like to voice my opinion in response to the article ‘School morns death of second graduate’ (September 28). I am a young driver and I passed my test about two months ago, having taken lessons from a qualified driving instructor.

Schools can help prevent road deaths

I also have several friends who are driving. The recent tragedies have once again raised my awareness to the danger of driving.

In transition year, we did a course called Drive for Life. In this we were told of tragic car crashes where young people were killed or seriously injured. Being only 15 at the time I was not aware of the power of cars and the difficulty in handling them. Now that I am in sixth year I feel that if we should do something similar to the “driver ed” classes that young people do in US schools. We teach English, Irish and maths in school but we don’t assist in anyway to teach driving. Its angers me that lives continue to be lost – as a country we need to find a way to protect those we love.
