It’s time to rescue the Fireman’s Rest

CONGRATULATIONS on your fine publication Life Through A Lens (June 17). In the Past Times selection, the images of the Fireman’s Rest in Patrick Street particularly caught my attention.

In the recent past, when the redesign of the city’s principal streets was mooted, plans were published among which was the dopey suggestion to resite the Fr Mathew Statue and the Fireman’s Rest.

Fortunately, our citizens raised their voices in protest and Fr Mathew was left in situ. Not so the Fireman’s Rest. At the time several articles and reports extolled the Fireman’s Rest as an important example of Victorian ironwork architecture. We were assured it was to be carefully dismantled, refurbished and relocated.

Instead we got a steel box near Winthrop Street (what is it?) and three carbuncles on Grand Parade.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of the Fireman’s Rest?

Could somebody from the deep, dark recesses of City Hall enlighten us? Anybody?
