EU lawyers will begin working with the Government on assurances to the Irish electorate in the event of a second vote on the Lisbon treaty.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen told his fellow EU leaders at their summit in Brussels that he will come forward with a decision on Ireland’s next step at their next meeting in December.

He intimated that the public would need to be reassured about the role of the union in matters of tax, abortion, the country’s neutrality and on keeping its commissioner.
