Old building would be ideal maritime museum

THE former O’Curry Street police station in Limerick — once a mission for seamen —would make an ideal location for a museum dedicated to Limerick’s maritime history.

Old building would be ideal maritime museum

While there are plans to redevelop the whole docklands area — as the Irish Examiner has been reporting — the building is in danger of becoming an eyesore.

It is a listed building owned by the Harbour Commissioners, so it would not be too difficult to have it transferred to public ownership.

The impressive stone structure was once a mission for seamen as the Windmill area of the city was its seafaring hub.

In line with the redevelopment of the area, the building could be restored to community use and part of it devoted to the maritime history of the city.

At present Limerick City Council is trying to mark the memory of the dockers and allied tradesmen who built the city’s maritime industries.

The restoration of this historic building for use as a maritime history museum would be a fitting tribute to all the dockers who worked on the quays of Limerick.
