Men’s rights have no place on the agenda

ANTHONY LEAVY (Letters, October 25) complains about the low representation of women in the Dáil and claims that, as a result “the interests and talents of one half of the population are marginalised”.

He may be right, but the question is which half? On the day that Mr Leavy’s letter was published, the Dáil established a number of select committees, one of which is the Select Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women’s Rights.

At a time when there is so much emphasis on ‘equality’, ‘inclusiveness’ and ‘human rights’, it is difficult to fathom why the ‘rights’ of half the population have been deliberately excluded from the remit of this committee.

Is it because men are deemed to be inferior human beings whose rights are less important than those of women or, as I suspect, another example of political correctness/cowardice?

Why not a Select Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Human Rights? Perhaps Peter Power TD, the newly-appointed chairperson, or one of the members of the select committee, could enlighten us.
