RECENTLY, Gay Mitchell MEP was getting himself extremely hot and bothered at remarks made by the German Ambassador on the coarsening of Irish life.

Mr Mitchell’s mock fury lies exposed by his failure to comment on the coarsening of our political debate by young Leo Varadkar TD, who seems to think that accusing the Taoiseach of being in the ‘gutter’ passes for debate. Worse still is the failure of Fine Gael’s elders to offer anything other than encouragement. If this is what the new FG frontbench has in store for us, then bring back Michael Noonan — at least he understand the concept of wit and debate.
