THE recent massive cocaine haul in Dunlough Bay off the Cork coast has highlighted the vulnerability of our coastal surveillance.

Use lighthouses to track drug traffickers

Having a fleet of purpose-built Customs’ vessels is impractical given the cost, length of coastline and winter weather conditions on the west coast.

A far more practical solution, or part solution, would be for Customs & Excise personnel to come to some sort of an agreement with Trinity House whereby the Customs would have part use of the lighthouses.
