THE Poles found themselves isolated at the EU summit in Brussels last night after insisting that Germany still owes them for their sufferings in the Second World War.

Prime Minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, told Polish national radio before yesterday’s meeting that they would have a population of 66 million rather than 38m were it not for the German invasion in 1939.

They are seeking to increase their voting strength in the EU, which is currently based on a complex mixture of population size and landmass.
