WITH a May election looming, the battle for the hearts and minds began in earnest over the weekend as the Government rounded on Labour’s promise of a 2% cut in the standard tax rate within two years of getting into power.

This tantalising carrot was dangled by Labour Leader Pat Rabbitte on the basis that the Government cuts in top tax rates are aimed at the wealthy.

It was described as a “road to Damascus” conversion by Finance Minister Brian Cowen who claimed it had more to do with poll rates than tax rates.
