THE remains of CJ Haughey have been well kicked around in the media, during the past few weeks, in a Mussolini/Ceausescu-style outflow of resentment and pent-up anger, particularly among the older generation of citizens who lived through the not-so-rare ould times when he was pre-eminent.

The duty of the electorate now is to ensure the evil he did does not live after him (while whatever good is not interred with his bones).

His followers and close companions are still in power, which says something about their resilience, and absolutely nothing good about the opposition parties. It is cause for despair that the two largest parties in the State appear to offer no real alternative to a continuation of the status quo.
