ALERTS over the threat of looming power cuts have gained considerable weight now that the IDA has added its voice to the mounting chorus of warnings from industry and business.

Arguably, the ESB has a vested interest in pressing the alarm bell to ensure its virtually monopoly in the Irish energy market is copper fastened.

However, the situation takes on a new sense of urgency following the IDA intervention. Its dire warning of power cuts unless Ireland gets more sources of electricity has long term implications for the drive to attract new jobs. In more immediate terms, the IDA has to anchor companies which already has roots in the economy.
