Nally case: no place for ethnic minorities

THE judiciary and the political elite are spending a lot of time fretting about how frozen embryos and same-sex marriages might threaten the “fabric of Irish society”.

As a citizen I am far more appalled by threats from men who might use excessive force against members of an ethnic minority who come near their homes.

Imagine if we lived in a society where your demeanour or accent was enough to have you shot, beaten and then killed by whatever means possible. It’s sad to know this has already happened. It is even sadder that the man who did it was allowed to walk free.

Does this tell us Travellers and other ethnic minorities still have no place in the kind of Irish society that the majority — and their leaders — wish to preserve and protect?
