Conradh should put greater focus on marketing

I WISH to express my disappointment with Conradh na Gaeilge’s approach to the Irish language.

While I greatly respect the organisation I have to say that its approach to the current debate has been lamentable.

Conradh does not work hard enough to market the Irish language and doesn’t seem to be active in most of the country (with the exception of the North).

It’s time the debate was opened up. There are initiatives that are working well to market the language, in particular Gael-Taca, Gaillimh Le Gaeilge and Forbairt Feirste.

Given their lack of emphasis on marketing, many people will question Conradh’s ability to debate with Fine Gael in any meaningful way.

The official Irish language movement needs to be radically restructured and in future most of the money spent should go on marketing the language only.

I don’t agree with Fine Gael’s policy to end the status of Irish as a required subject for the Leaving Certificate, but I accept that they are trying to do something meaningful.

The same cannot be said for a lot of people in the broader Irish language movement.
