Annihilation of Israel the real objective

IT is unfortunate, that Fintan Lane (Irish Examiner letters, August 25), like many others, does not seem to comprehend the Middle East situation.

The bottom line is that Hezbollah, backed by Iran and Syria, are bent on the annihilation of the state of Israel.

The preparation for this end was obvious, with hundreds of underground arsenals and communication systems, as well as missiles kept in apartment blocks. Lebanon, which should be a sovereign state, did not and could not prevent these undercover operations. The sole purpose of these prepared fortifications was an assault to annihilate the state of Israel.

What would any nation do in the face of such a threat? The death of civilians in the bombardments is horrible. But so is the use of apartment blocks to store and launch missiles — the sole declared purpose of which is to kill civilians. The latter is murder, the former is collateral damage, which regrettably happens in any war.
