Seven things worth doing without to secure a king-size bed in Ireland
Recently, while travelling in Ireland on business, I had a few personal expenses which led me to look at other costs that might be acquired over a six-month period and came up with a surprising result, as listed below:
1. Doctor (10 minutes in surgery. Consultation only): €40.
2. Dentist (15 minutes in surgery. Inspection only): €45.
3. Hairdresser (one hour): €80
4. Solicitor (half-hour): €70
5. Taxi (40 mins): €60
6. Leisure centre (two hours): €30.
7. Facial treatment (one hour): €75.
On my way through Tipperary, to give one example, I decided to check out a certain hotel that I happened to pass along the way. &
On approaching I thought this looks like an expensive place to stay, but it was 6pm and I really felt like relaxing after a long drive.
I booked in for the night at a rate of €99 for a single stay in a king-size bed with comfortable duvet in a spacious room with bathroom.
Also included was a buffet breakfast (as much as one could eat) and use of all facilities — pool, gym, steamroom, sauna, beautiful grounds, and a small charge for golf if I wished to play.
So add to the list:
8. Hotel stay with breakfast — 14 hours: €99
This works out roughly at €7.50 per hour.
I would happily forego the first seven items on my list for regular hotel breaks at these rates.
I believe all of the first seven items go up by at least 10% annually, but I am told that hotels give regular discounts year-round.
Reconsider and stop belittling Ireland in the tourism stakes.
