Bridge jumpers in Waterford warned of dangers

A councillor in Waterford has issued an urgent warning following reports of people jumping off Lismore Bridge into the Blackwater for fun.

West Waterford councillor Donnchadh Mulcahy said the activity is an “accident waiting to happen.” 

"I'd be the first to admit I'm a bit of a thrill seeker myself, but this isn't thrill seeking. It's just plain reckless. As someone who regularly kayaks beneath Lismore Bridge, I know this stretch of river extremely well.

“There are shallow areas, hidden rocks and constantly changing water levels.

“Anyone jumping from that bridge is taking an enormous gamble with their life," said Cllr Mulcahy.

The councillor said he has confirmed the reports and that those engaging in the activity may be doing so for social media content.

He said what may appear to be harmless fun or a social media stunt could have devastating consequences.

"We cannot wait until there is a tragedy before action is taken. One wrong jump is all it takes. No social media video, challenge or dare is worth a life."

Cllr Mulcahy contacted the local school and asked that the message be shared with parents and students in an effort to prevent further incidents.

And he urged any witnesses to report incidents to the authorities.

"I want to thank the school for responding so quickly. I would also urge every parent to have a conversation with their children about the dangers involved. This is not safe and it needs to stop.

"I don't want to see another family devastated by something that could have been prevented. The message is simple: don't jump. Nothing is worth risking your life for," said Cllr Mulcahy.
