Homes were evacuated in west Cork on Thursday night after a suspected pipe bomb was found in Bandon.
The unexploded device was discovered at the entrance to a house on Laurel Drive, a residential area of the town, at approximately 6pm.
The Defence Forces' Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit removed the suspected device, which is to undergo ballistic and forensic examination.
No one was at the property when the device was discovered, but a neighbour noticed it and alerted gardaí.
A motive for the incident remains unknown. However, sources said such an occurrence is highly unusual in the area and has caused concern locally.
“We don't know what's behind this, it's bizarre,” one garda source said.
The couple who live at the property are believed to be in their 40s. They are local to the area and were described by local sources as “decent people”.
It is understood the device was deliberately placed outside the house.
Gardaí in Bandon are seeking to speak to anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity in the area on Thursday. They are also appealing for anyone with video footage, including dashcam recordings, to come forward.
A senior investigating officer has been assigned to the case.
Homes in the area were evacuated while the EOD unit carried out its operation and removed the suspected device.
A garda spokesperson said gardaí in Bandon received a report of a suspicious device at a location in Bandon on Thursday.
“A number of people were evacuated from the area and the services of the Army EOD were requested. A cordon was established in the area.
“The device has been removed and the cordon has been lifted.
“A technical examination of the scene was carried out and investigations are ongoing,” the spokesperson said.
