New public toilets on the Marina Promenade in Cork City are set to open next week.
Installation work is currently underway on the two accessible units, which cost Cork City Council over €30,000.
Cork City Council said it expects the toilets to be fully operational before the end of next week. The site is beside Cortado Coffee at the city end of the Marina Promenade.
The units will be open during the café’s operating hours, from 8am to 6pm, seven days a week, and will be managed by the café operator.
A council spokesperson said the addition to Marina Park is part of its ongoing policy to provide public toilets in areas with the “highest footfall.”
“Therefore, the Regional Park in Ballincollig, Fitzgerald’s Park, Tramore Valley Park and now Marina Park all have public toilets,” the spokesperson said.
However, the spokesperson added that the “provision and annual maintenance of such public toilets is very costly.”
“It has cost the city council just over €30,000 to buy the new toilet unit for Marina Park, with its daily maintenance and cleaning regime linked to a 10-year lease,” they said.
“Which was granted following a tender process during the summer to Cortado, the operator of next-door café, located at the free public car park at the city end of the Marina Promenade.”
Additional public toilets are also available under the “Central Hall” structure near the city end of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
