A woman fatally struck by a car which mounted a footpath in Charleville on Saturday was the mother-in-law of Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe.
Mary Fehilly, who was in her 70s and from the town, was supporting a collection for the local GAA club along with a man in his 60s when they were both struck, it is understood.
The driver, a woman, may have been trying to park her car when she lost control of it and it collided with the two people on the footpath of the main street in Charleville shortly before 2pm on Saturday.
Emergency services arrived quickly, and both pedestrians were taken to Cork University Hospital.
The woman later died from her injuries. The man is in stable condition. The driver of the car was uninjured.
The injured man and the driver are also from Charleville.
Speaking on Sunday night, Clare TD Cathal Crowe described Mary Fehilly as a “wonderful mother” and an “adoring wife”.
“I struck gold when I married into Maeve’s amazing family,” he said.
“The fabulous lynchpin of that family was Mary Fehilly. We are absolutely heartbroken to have tragically lost Mary this weekend.
“Mary, there will not be the likes of you again. Sleep gently with the angels.”
Superintendent Gary McPolin said what had happened on Charleville's Main Street was “a tragic accident”.
“I am so sorry for the deceased and the injured party and the driver.
Gardaí are asking anyone who saw the accident or has mobile or dash-cam footage from the area at that time to contact Mallow Garda Station at 022-31450, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111, or any Garda station.
Charleville GAA extended its sympathies to the family.
A statement said: "Charleville GAA would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Fehilly family following the tragic death of Mary yesterday on Main Street. Our thoughts and prayers are also with all the other families involved.
"This week’s Lotto Draw will be cancelled as a mark of respect."
It is the second time in recent weeks that pedestrians have been killed by vehicles in Cork towns.
A 90-year-old man was killed after he tried to push a woman out of the way of a moving vehicle in a car park in Fermoy shortly after 11.15am on October 18.
Father of four and retired teacher and farmer, Cal O'Keefe, was pronounced dead in the Supervalu car park on Courthouse Road.
A woman in her 60s was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the car, who was in his 90s, was treated at the scene.
