South-East Technological University suffers cyberattack at Waterford campus

The cyberattack has only impacted SETU's Waterford campus.

Waterford’s campus of the South East Technological University has been hit with a cyber attack.

It is understood that classes at the campus may be affected early next week following the attack.

In a statement on Friday evening, SETU said: “South East Technological University (SETU) has experienced a cybersecurity incident targeting our IT systems. The incident was identified at the earliest possible stage and our IT team moved swiftly to safeguard our IT systems. We have informed relevant Government departments and authorities.”

It added: “Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that any data or information has been compromised. However, we continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations are ongoing. Our internal IT team is liaising with external cyber security experts to resolve the issue and minimise any potential impact. However, staff and students may experience some disruption as we continue to work to resolve the issue.”

The attack became apparent as the campus was marking the conferring of students at the facility on Friday.

A source at the university said that the incident has occurred in one of the campus's busiest weeks, but said: "It was identified as early as possible".

SETU, Ireland's fifth technological university, was established on May 1, 2022 and has 18,500 students across four campuses in Waterford, Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow.
