Cork residents affected by flooding during the period of severe weather at the weekend have been told they can apply to a Government scheme for financial support.

Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys said on Monday the humanitarian assistance scheme would be available for those living in properties directly affected by flooding.

A major clean-up got under way on Sunday after a status orange rain warning caused severe flooding in parts of Cork on Saturday. Up to 65mm of rain was recorded in locations across the county in a 12-hour period.

Bantry was one of the worst affected areas with a number of shops flooded on Main Street and New Street. The West Cork town has experienced flooding four times between 2018 and 2020 which has had a devastating impact on local businesses.

Some 37 businesses and five homes were flooded, with angry business owners saying they would contact Cork County Council to demand a commercial rates waiver.

Ms Humphreys said the Government’s supports under the humanitarian assistance scheme provide income-tested financial support to people whose homes are damaged from flooding and severe weather events and who are unable to meet costs for essential needs, household items and structural repair.

“I’m very conscious of the serious disruption that severe weather and flooding is causing for individuals and families in County Cork, especially in Bantry,” she said.

“The Humanitarian Assistance Scheme is open and support is available for those whose homes are affected by the flooding.

“If any homeowner affected by severe weather needs to access these supports, they can contact the Community Welfare Service by phoning 0818 60 70 80.”
